Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is “the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for the improvement in behavior” (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007, p. 690).
ABA is a highly specialized field wherein most of the work is done by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCaBA, BCBA, BCBA-D). A BCBA’s scope of practice is far reaching. As a BCBA working with individuals with developmental disabilities or special education needs our focus is on socially significant behavior change. In the school setting we target behaviors that interfere with the learning of the individual and others, as well as behaviors that create barriers to inclusion and relationship building. We adhere to a strict Code of Ethics (see here).
Our Guiding Principles
- Behavior analytic interventions should be simplified in order to be maintainable within a learner’s day to day life. If mom, dad, grandma, teacher, or friend can not utilize the strategy it is not likely to produce socially significant change.
- All learners are inherently valuable and capable of meaningful inclusion within society.
- Skills should be taught with an aim towards generalization to maximize efficiency and value of their education.
- Education can be meaningful and productive within the context of the learners life.
